Yukihiro Matsumoto, known as “Matz”, is a Japanese computer scientist who created the Ruby programming language, released in 1995. Ruby was designed to make programmers happy, and the Ruby on Rails framework made it popular for web development worldwide.

Biography

Background

Matsumoto grew up in Tottori Prefecture, taught himself programming and studied information science at the University of Tsukuba.

Ruby

Wanting a scripting language more object-oriented than Perl and easier than Python, he began Ruby in 1993 and released it in 1995, naming it after the birthstone of a colleague. He blended ideas from Perl, Smalltalk, Lisp and Eiffel.

Global spread

Ruby was first popular in Japan. After David Heinemeier Hansson released Ruby on Rails in 2004, it was used to build companies such as GitHub, Shopify and Airbnb.

Work

Matsumoto has worked for Heroku and other organisations on the Ruby interpreter (MRI) and lives in Matsue, Shimane. He received the FSF Award for the Advancement of Free Software in 2011.
