Uday Kotak is a banker who founded Kotak Mahindra in 1985 with a small loan from family and friends and built it into one of India’s largest private-sector banks. He led the bank until 2023 and is regarded as one of India’s most successful self-made financiers.
Biography
Early life
Kotak grew up in a large Gujarati joint family in Bombay that traded cotton. A promising cricketer, he was hit on the head by a ball while playing, which ended his sporting ambitions. He studied at Sydenham College and earned an MBA from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
Starting out
In 1985 he started Kotak Capital Management Finance with a modest sum, discounting bills for companies. Industrialists Anand Mahindra and his family invested early, and the company was renamed Kotak Mahindra Finance.
Becoming a bank
Kotak expanded into investment banking, broking, car finance and asset management. In 2003 Kotak Mahindra Finance became the first non-banking finance company in India to be converted into a bank. Kotak Mahindra Bank grew into one of the country’s largest private lenders, partly through the acquisition of ING Vysya Bank in 2015.
Later roles
Kotak chaired a committee set up by the market regulator SEBI on corporate governance and was president of the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2020–21. He stepped down as CEO of the bank in 2023 and remains a major shareholder.
