Sania Mirza is India’s most successful woman tennis player, a former doubles world No. 1 who won six Grand Slam titles. In 2005 she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title and she was India’s top-ranked woman in singles for a decade.

Biography

Early life

Born in Mumbai and raised in Hyderabad, Mirza started playing tennis at six, coached by her father, Imran Mirza. She won the Wimbledon girls’ doubles title in 2003.

Singles

Raised in Hyderabad, Mirza won the 2003 Wimbledon girls’ doubles title and in 2005 won the WTA tournament in Hyderabad, the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title. She reached the fourth round of the US Open that year and a career-high singles ranking of 27 in 2007.

Doubles champion

Injuries led her to focus on doubles. She won mixed doubles titles at the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open with Mahesh Bhupathi and the 2014 US Open with Bruno Soares. With Martina Hingis she won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2015 and the Australian Open in 2016, becoming world No. 1 in women’s doubles in 2015. She retired in 2023.

She received the Padma Shri in 2006, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2015 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

Santina

Her partnership with Martina Hingis, nicknamed “Santina”, dominated women’s doubles in 2015–16: they won three Grand Slam titles in a row, a 41-match winning streak, and the WTA Finals. In April 2015 she became the first Indian woman to be ranked world No. 1 in doubles, a position she held for 91 weeks.

Legacy

Mirza is widely credited with inspiring a generation of Indian girls to take up tennis. She also won Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medals. She retired in February 2023 after a farewell tournament in Dubai, and her autobiography, Ace Against Odds, was published in 2016.

Personal life

Mirza married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in 2010; their son Izhaan was born in 2018. The couple later separated. She runs a tennis academy in Hyderabad and has worked as a commentator and mentor since retiring.
