Rohan Bopanna is a former doubles specialist from Karnataka who won the 2024 Australian Open with Matthew Ebden and, at 43, became the oldest player ever to reach world No. 1 for the first time.
Biography
Early life
Bopanna grew up on a coffee estate in Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka, and began playing tennis at 11. He chopped wood on the estate to build strength, a training story he has often told. He trained in Pune and Bengaluru before turning professional.
Career
Bopanna grew up in Coorg and Bangalore. With Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi he formed the “IndoPak Express”, reaching the 2010 US Open men’s doubles final and promoting peace between the two countries. He won his first Grand Slam title in mixed doubles at the 2017 French Open with Gabriela Dabrowski.
Late-career peak
In January 2024, at 43, he won the Australian Open men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden and became the oldest first-time world No. 1 in history. He received the Padma Shri the same year and represented India in the Davis Cup and at the Olympics.
Career highlights
Specialising in doubles with a powerful serve, Bopanna reached the 2010 US Open final with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, the ATP World Tour Finals with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2012, and Wimbledon semi-finals. He won the 2017 French Open mixed doubles, and in 2024, aged 43, won the Australian Open men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden — becoming the oldest man to reach world No. 1 for the first time. He also won mixed doubles gold at the 2023 Asian Games with Rutuja Bhosale. He represented India in the Davis Cup for two decades.
Personal life and legacy
Bopanna is married to Supriya Annaiah; they have a daughter. His late-career success — winning his first men’s Grand Slam title and reaching No. 1 in his forties — became one of tennis’s great longevity stories, and he credits yoga and fitness changes for extending his career. He runs a tennis academy in Bengaluru.
