Mahesh Bhupathi is a former world No. 1 doubles player who in 1997 became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam title. He won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles, including a career Grand Slam in mixed doubles, and later captained India’s Davis Cup team.
Biography
Career
Bhupathi played college tennis at the University of Mississippi. In 1997 he won the French Open mixed doubles with Rika Hiraki, India’s first Grand Slam title. With Leander Paes he reached all four men’s doubles Grand Slam finals in 1999, winning the French Open and Wimbledon, and the pair became world No. 1.
He went on to win four men’s and eight mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, completing the career mixed-doubles Grand Slam at the 2006 Australian Open.
The Indian Express
Bhupathi and Leander Paes formed one of the most successful doubles pairings of the late 1990s, reaching all four Grand Slam finals in 1999 and becoming the first all-Indian team to win a Grand Slam doubles title, at the French Open. Their partnership split and reunited several times, and together they won Asian Games golds and many Davis Cup matches for India.
Partners and titles
Beyond Paes, he won men’s doubles majors with Max Mirnyi and mixed titles with partners including Mary Pierce, Elena Likhovtseva, Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza — with whom he won the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open mixed doubles. He was ranked world No. 1 in doubles in 1999.
After playing
Bhupathi founded the International Premier Tennis League in 2014 and served as India’s non-playing Davis Cup captain from 2017. He received the Padma Shri in 2001. He is married to actress Lara Dutta.
Personal life
Bhupathi married actress Lara Dutta, a former Miss Universe, in 2011; they have a daughter, Saira. He was earlier married to model Shvetha Jaishankar. His father, C. G. Krishna Bhupathi, was a tennis coach and his first mentor.
