Ron Rivest is an American cryptographer at MIT who co-invented the RSA public-key encryption system with Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman in 1977. RSA made secure online shopping and banking possible. He also designed the RC4 cipher and the MD5 hash and co-wrote a famous algorithms textbook.

Biography

Education

Rivest studied mathematics at Yale and earned his PhD in computer science at Stanford in 1974. He joined the MIT faculty that year.

RSA

In 1977, after reading about the Diffie–Hellman key exchange, Rivest, Shamir and Adleman searched for a practical public-key system. Rivest found the key idea — based on the difficulty of factoring large numbers — one night in April 1977. RSA lets anyone encrypt a message with a public key that only the holder of the private key can unlock, and it underpins secure websites and digital signatures.

RSA Security and ciphers

The three founded RSA Data Security in 1982. Rivest designed the RC2, RC4, RC5 and RC6 ciphers and the MD4 and MD5 hash functions, once used widely across the internet.

Teaching and voting

With Thomas Cormen, Charles Leiserson and Clifford Stein he wrote Introduction to Algorithms, one of the best-selling computer science textbooks. He has also worked on secure electronic voting.
