Background
Liu grew up poor in rural Jiangsu and studied sociology at Renmin University, teaching himself programming.
Jingdong
In 1998 he opened a stall selling magneto-optical drives in Beijing’s Zhongguancun. During the 2003 SARS outbreak he moved sales online.
JD.com
JD built its own warehouses and delivery staff, offering same-day delivery. It listed on the Nasdaq in 2014, and Tencent and Walmart became partners.
Controversy
In 2018 he was arrested in Minneapolis on a rape allegation; prosecutors declined to charge him, and a civil case was settled in 2022. He stepped down as CEO in 2022.
