Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and vice-president of the National Conference. Grandson of Sheikh Abdullah and son of Farooq Abdullah, he earlier served as Chief Minister of the state from 2009 to 2015 and as a Union minister.

Biography

Early life

Omar Abdullah was born in England to Farooq Abdullah and his British wife, Mollie. He went to school at Burn Hall in Srinagar and the Lawrence School, Sanawar, took a commerce degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai, and studied at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. He worked in the hospitality industry before entering politics.

National politics

Elected MP for Srinagar in 1998 at 28, he became Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and then for External Affairs in the Vajpayee government — at the time the youngest Union minister. He became president of the National Conference in 2002.

Chief Minister

In January 2009, at 38, he became the youngest Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, leading a coalition with the Congress until 2015. After the revocation of the state’s special status in August 2019 he was held in preventive detention for about eight months.

The National Conference won the 2024 assembly election, the first since Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory, and Abdullah was sworn in as its Chief Minister on 16 October 2024.

Political dynasty

Omar Abdullah belongs to Kashmir’s most prominent political family. His grandfather Sheikh Abdullah founded the National Conference and led Jammu and Kashmir after 1947; his father Farooq Abdullah has served as Chief Minister several times and as a Union minister. Omar was the youngest Chief Minister in the state’s history.

Challenges in office

His first term faced the violent 2010 street protests in the Kashmir Valley, in which over a hundred people died, and devastating floods in 2014. After the 2019 revocation of special status he spent about eight months in detention under the Public Safety Act. Since 2024 he has governed a union territory with limited powers, pressing for the restoration of statehood.
