Prithviraj Chauhan was a king of the Chahamana dynasty who ruled from Ajmer in the late twelfth century. He defeated Muhammad of Ghor at the first Battle of Tarain in 1191 but was defeated and killed after the second battle in 1192. He became a legendary hero in Indian folklore.
Biography
A young king
Prithviraj became ruler of the Chahamana (Chauhan) kingdom, centred on Ajmer, as a boy around 1177, after his father’s death, with his mother acting as regent at first. He campaigned against neighbouring kingdoms, including the Chandelas of Jejakabhukti.
Tarain
In 1191 he defeated the invading army of Muhammad of Ghor at the first Battle of Tarain, near present-day Thanesar in Haryana. The next year, at the second Battle of Tarain, Muhammad returned with a larger army and defeated him.
Legend
Later poems, especially Prithviraj Raso, attributed to his court poet Chand Bardai, made him a legendary hero, including the romantic story of his elopement with Samyukta, daughter of Jaichand of Kannauj. Historians treat many of these stories as legend rather than fact.
Death
Prithviraj was captured and executed soon afterwards. The defeat opened north India to the rule of Muhammad’s successors, leading to the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate.
