Background
Galperin’s family ran a leather business in Argentina. He studied finance at the Wharton School and worked at YPF, the Argentine oil company.
MercadoLibre
While doing an MBA at Stanford, he pitched an online marketplace for Latin America, inspired by eBay, and founded MercadoLibre in 1999 with backing from investors including John Muse.
Growth
eBay took a stake in 2001. MercadoLibre listed on the Nasdaq in 2007, built its own logistics and launched Mercado Pago, one of the region’s largest fintech services.
Chairman
He moved to Uruguay in 2020. On 1 January 2026 he became executive chairman, handing the CEO role to Ariel Szarfsztejn.
