Biography
Background
Liang grew up in Guangdong, where his father was a teacher, and studied electronic information engineering at Zhejiang University.
High-Flyer
He used machine learning for stock trading and in 2015 co-founded High-Flyer, which became one of China’s largest quantitative funds and bought thousands of Nvidia GPUs.
DeepSeek
In 2023 he founded DeepSeek to research general AI. It released open-weight models; DeepSeek-V3 and the reasoning model R1 in early 2025 rivalled top Western models and topped app-store charts.
Impact
DeepSeek’s claimed low training cost shook global technology stocks. Liang met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in 2025 and was named to Time’s 100 most influential people in AI.
