Lakshmi Mittal is an Indian-born steel magnate who built ArcelorMittal, for many years the world’s largest steelmaker, by buying and turning around struggling plants around the world. Based in London, he received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
Biography
Calcutta
Mittal was born in a village in Rajasthan and grew up in Calcutta, where his father ran a steel business. He graduated in commerce from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta.
Indonesia and beyond
In 1976 he set up a small steel mill in Indonesia. He then built a business by buying state-owned steel plants that were losing money — in Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Kazakhstan and elsewhere — and making them profitable with new management.
ArcelorMittal
His company Mittal Steel became the world’s largest steelmaker, and in 2006, after a hostile takeover battle, it merged with Europe’s Arcelor to form ArcelorMittal. He has served as its chairman and chief executive and later executive chairman, with his son Aditya taking over as CEO in 2021.
Life in London
Mittal lives in London and has been one of the richest people in the United Kingdom. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, and his family has funded sports, education and health causes in India.
