Sir Jony Ive is a British-American designer who led design at Apple for more than two decades, shaping the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. He left Apple in 2019 to found the design firm LoveFrom, and in 2025 his device start-up io merged with OpenAI.

Biography

Education

Ive grew up in Chingford and Stafford; his father was a silversmith and design teacher. He studied industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) and co-founded the London design agency Tangerine.

Apple

He joined Apple in 1992. After Steve Jobs returned, Ive designed the translucent iMac (1998), which revived the company. He went on to lead the design of the iPod, MacBook, iPhone (2007), iPad and Apple Watch, becoming senior vice-president of design and then chief design officer in 2015.

Style

His work is known for simplicity, rounded aluminium and glass forms and attention to how products are made. Jobs called him his “spiritual partner” at Apple.

LoveFrom and OpenAI

Ive left Apple in 2019 and founded LoveFrom with Marc Newson. In 2025 OpenAI acquired io, the hardware start-up he co-founded, and Ive took a leading design role across OpenAI. He was knighted in 2012 and has been chancellor of the Royal College of Art since 2017.
