Background
Field grew up in Sebastopol, California, and studied computer science at Brown University, where he met Evan Wallace.
Thiel Fellowship
In 2012 he received a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship to leave university and start a company. He and Wallace spent four years building Figma before its 2016 release.
Figma
Figma let designers work together in real time in the browser, like Google Docs for design. It replaced older tools at many companies.
Adobe and IPO
Adobe agreed in 2022 to buy Figma for $20 billion, but abandoned the deal in 2023 under regulatory pressure, paying a $1 billion break-up fee. Figma listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2025.
