Biography

Background

Booch graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1977 and earned a master’s in electrical engineering at UC Santa Barbara. He served in the Air Force before joining Rational Software.

The Booch method

In the 1980s and early 1990s he developed a method and notation for designing object-oriented software, described in Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications.

UML

At Rational in the mid-1990s, Booch, Jacobson and Rumbaugh — the “Three Amigos” — merged their methods into UML, adopted as a standard by the Object Management Group in 1997.
