John Romero is an American game designer who co-founded id Software and designed levels for Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, games that defined the first-person shooter. He popularised the term “deathmatch” for multiplayer battles.
Biography
Background
Romero, who is of Mexican-American heritage, taught himself programming and published games in computer magazines as a teenager.
id Software
At Softdisk he met John Carmack, and in 1991 they founded id Software. Romero designed levels and tools for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake.
Ion Storm
He left id in 1996 and co-founded Ion Storm in Dallas. Its first game, Daikatana (2000), was delayed and poorly received, and a provocative advert became infamous.
Later
He has worked on mobile and online games, taught game design and released Sigil, an unofficial Doom episode, in 2019. He moved to Ireland, where his studio Romero Games is based.
