John Hopfield is an American physicist whose 1982 Hopfield network showed how a network of simple neurons could store and recall memories. The idea helped revive neural-network research, and he shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with Geoffrey Hinton.
Biography
Background
Hopfield’s parents were both physicists. He studied at Swarthmore and earned his PhD at Cornell in 1958, then worked at Bell Labs and taught at Berkeley and Princeton.
Biology
Moving into biophysics, he proposed kinetic proofreading in 1974, explaining how cells copy DNA so accurately.
Hopfield network
At Caltech in 1982 he described a network in which memories are stable states of an energy landscape, so a partial cue recalls the whole memory. The paper drew physicists into neural networks.
Nobel Prize
He returned to Princeton in 1997. In 2024, aged 91, he and Hinton received the Nobel Prize in Physics for foundational work enabling machine learning.
