Virat Kohli is one of the leading batsmen of his generation. He holds the record for the most centuries in one-day internationals, captained India to a record number of Test wins, and won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Biography
Early career
Kohli trained at the West Delhi Cricket Academy and led India to victory at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. He made his ODI debut that August and was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup.
Captain and run machine
Kohli captained India in Tests from 2014 to 2022, winning 40 matches — more than any other Indian captain — and leading the first Indian side to win a Test series in Australia (2018–19). In white-ball cricket he became known as one of the finest chasers in the game; at the 2023 World Cup he scored his 50th ODI century, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record.
Recent years
After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he was player of the match in the final, he retired from T20 internationals, and in 2025 he retired from Test cricket. He has played his entire IPL career for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who won their first title in 2025. He is married to actress Anushka Sharma.
Fitness and approach
Kohli is credited with transforming fitness culture in Indian cricket, adopting a rigorous training regime and diet that raised standards across the team. His intensity, aggression on the field and mastery of run-chases earned him the nickname “Chase Master”.
Personal life
He married actress Anushka Sharma in Italy in December 2017; they have two children. He is one of the most-followed sportspeople in the world on social media, and co-owns businesses in fashion and fitness. He lost his father, Prem Kohli, in 2006 while playing a Ranji Trophy match, and returned the next day to bat for Delhi — an episode often cited as a sign of his determination.
Legacy
Kohli is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era across all formats. His aggressive captaincy helped build an Indian Test team capable of winning abroad, and his emphasis on fitness raised standards across Indian cricket. He is also one of the most marketable athletes in the world.
