Jacob Ziv was an Israeli electrical engineer who, with Abraham Lempel, created the LZ77 and LZ78 compression algorithms. Their methods underpin ZIP files, GIF and PNG images and much of the internet’s data compression.

Biography

Education

Ziv studied electrical engineering at the Technion and earned his doctorate at MIT in 1962. He worked for Israel’s defence research and at Bell Labs.

Lempel–Ziv

In 1977 and 1978 Ziv and Abraham Lempel published algorithms that compress data by replacing repeated sequences with references to earlier occurrences. They work without knowing the data in advance and approach the theoretical limits of compression.

Impact

Variants such as LZW and DEFLATE are used in ZIP, gzip, PNG and GIF and in internet protocols.

Honours

Ziv was president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He received the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2021 and died in 2023.
