Biography
Background
Dorsey grew up in St. Louis and as a teenager wrote dispatch software still used by taxi companies. He studied at Missouri University of Science and Technology and New York University but did not graduate.
At the podcast company Odeo in 2006 he proposed a service for sharing short status updates by text message. On 21 March 2006 he posted the first tweet, “just setting up my twttr”. He was CEO from 2007 to 2008 and again from 2015 to 2021.
Square and Block
In 2009 he co-founded Square with Jim McKelvey, whose small card reader let anyone accept card payments. Renamed Block in 2021, it also owns Cash App, Afterpay and the music service Tidal.
Later projects
Dorsey supported Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in 2022, backed the decentralised network Bluesky and later Nostr, and focuses on Bitcoin.
