Biography

Background

Van Rossum studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Amsterdam and worked at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), on the ABC teaching language.

Python

Over Christmas 1989 he began writing an interpreter for a new scripting language, naming it after Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Python 0.9.0 was released in February 1991. Its readable syntax and “batteries included” library won broad adoption.

Leadership

As BDFL he guided Python’s design, including the move to Python 3 in 2008. In 2018, after a heated debate over a new feature, he stepped down and the community adopted an elected steering council.

Career

He worked at Google, where he spent half his time on Python, then at Dropbox. He came out of retirement in 2020 to join Microsoft, working on making Python faster.
