Fei-Fei Li is a Chinese-born American computer scientist at Stanford who created ImageNet, the huge labelled image dataset that sparked the deep-learning revolution in computer vision. She co-founded Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI and the spatial-intelligence company World Labs.
Biography
Early life
Li grew up in Chengdu and moved to New Jersey at 15, where her family ran a dry-cleaning shop while she studied. She studied physics at Princeton and earned a PhD at Caltech in 2005.
ImageNet
At Princeton and Stanford from 2007 she built ImageNet, eventually more than 14 million images labelled by crowd workers. The ImageNet challenge, won by AlexNet in 2012, showed the power of deep learning.
Human-centred AI
Li was chief scientist of AI at Google Cloud in 2017–2018, co-founded the non-profit AI4ALL and in 2019 co-founded Stanford HAI.
World Labs
In 2024 she co-founded World Labs to build AI that understands 3D worlds. Her memoir The Worlds I See appeared in 2023, and Time named her among the “Architects of AI” in 2025. In September 2026 AMD agreed to buy World Labs for about $8.2 billion.
