Allen Emerson was an American computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin who co-invented model checking with Edmund Clarke as a Harvard PhD student. He shared the 2007 Turing Award with Clarke and Joseph Sifakis.
Biography
Education
Emerson studied mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and earned his PhD in applied mathematics at Harvard in 1981 under Edmund Clarke.
Model checking
His doctoral work with Clarke introduced model checking and computation tree logic (CTL), a temporal logic for describing branching possibilities in a system’s behaviour. The method automatically checks whether a design satisfies its specification.
Texas
Emerson joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1981, where he held the Regents Chair. He worked on making model checking scale through symmetry and other techniques.
Honours
He received the Paris Kanellakis Award in 1998 and the Turing Award in 2007. He died in October 2024.
