Droupadi Murmu is the 15th President of India, in office since July 2022. A former teacher from Odisha’s Santhal community, she is the first President from a Scheduled Tribe and the second woman to hold the office.
Biography
Early life
Murmu was born into a Santhal family in a village in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. She graduated from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar and worked as a junior assistant in the state irrigation department and later as an honorary teacher at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur.
Odisha politics
She began her political career as a councillor in Rairangpur in 1997 with the BJP. Elected MLA for Rairangpur in 2000 and re-elected in 2004, she served as a minister in the BJD–BJP coalition government of Naveen Patnaik, handling commerce and transport and later fisheries and animal resources. The Odisha assembly named her its best legislator in 2007.
Governor and President
In 2015 she became the first woman Governor of Jharkhand, serving until 2021. Nominated by the NDA in 2022, she defeated Yashwant Sinha in the presidential election and was sworn in on 25 July 2022 — the first President born after independence and the first from a tribal community.
Her personal life has been marked by tragedy: she lost her husband and both her sons within a few years, and has spoken publicly about turning to spirituality and meditation.
President
As President, Murmu has spoken often about the education of girls, tribal welfare and the environment. In 2023 she flew a sortie in a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet, and she has addressed Parliament, conferred national awards and represented India on state visits. She was the first President to address a Parliament session in the new Parliament building.
Personal tragedy and faith
Between 2009 and 2014 Murmu lost her elder son, her younger son and her husband, as well as her mother and a brother. She has spoken of finding strength through meditation with the Brahma Kumaris. She converted part of her family home in Pahadpur into a residential school in memory of her husband and sons.
