Donald Knuth is an American computer scientist known as the father of the analysis of algorithms. His multi-volume work The Art of Computer Programming is a classic of the field, and he created the TeX typesetting system used for mathematical and scientific publishing. He received the Turing Award in 1974.
Biography
Early life
Knuth grew up in Milwaukee and studied at the Case Institute of Technology, where he wrote programs for the IBM 650 and computer analyses of the basketball team. He earned a PhD in mathematics from Caltech in 1963.
The Art of Computer Programming
In 1962 a publisher asked him to write a book about compilers. The project grew into The Art of Computer Programming, whose first volume appeared in 1968. Its careful mathematical treatment of algorithms for sorting, searching and other tasks helped establish computer science as a rigorous discipline. Volume 4 is being published in parts.
TeX and literate programming
Unhappy with the quality of typesetting for his books in the 1970s, Knuth spent about a decade creating TeX and the Metafont font system. TeX remains the standard for typesetting mathematics, used through LaTeX by scientists worldwide. He also introduced “literate programming”, writing programs as readable essays.
Stanford
Knuth joined Stanford in 1968 and became professor emeritus in 1993 to concentrate on his books. He famously sends cheques to readers who find errors in them. His honours include the Turing Award (1974), the National Medal of Science and the Kyoto Prize.
