Dennis Ritchie was an American computer scientist at Bell Labs who created the C programming language and, with Ken Thompson, the Unix operating system. C and Unix underpin most of today’s software, from phones to supercomputers. He shared the 1983 Turing Award with Thompson.
Biography
Early life
Ritchie grew up in New Jersey, where his father was a Bell Labs scientist. He studied physics and applied mathematics at Harvard and joined Bell Labs in 1967.
The C language
Between 1969 and 1973 Ritchie developed C from Ken Thompson’s B language, adding data types and structures. C was efficient enough to write an operating system yet portable across machines. In 1973 Unix was rewritten in C, which let it spread to many kinds of computers.
Spreading Unix and C
The book The C Programming Language (1978), written with Brian Kernighan and known as “K&R”, taught generations of programmers. C and its descendants — C++, Objective-C, Java, C# — dominate systems programming, and Unix ideas live on in Linux, macOS, iOS and Android.
Legacy
Ritchie and Thompson received the Turing Award in 1983 and the US National Medal of Technology in 1998. Ritchie died at home in New Jersey in October 2011, a week after Steve Jobs; his death received far less attention despite his enormous influence.
