Biography
Background
Chesky grew up in Niskayuna, New York, and studied industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he met Joe Gebbia.
Air mattresses
In 2007, unable to pay their rent, Chesky and Gebbia rented three air mattresses in their apartment to visitors at a design conference. With Nathan Blecharczyk they launched AirBed & Breakfast in 2008.
Cereal and Y Combinator
To survive, they sold novelty cereal boxes during the 2008 election. Y Combinator accepted them in 2009, and the company, renamed Airbnb, grew rapidly worldwide.
CEO
Chesky led Airbnb through regulatory fights in many cities and a collapse in travel during COVID-19 in 2020, cutting a quarter of staff before a successful IPO that December.
