Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the sport. Known as “The Wizard” for his ball control, he won Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936. India’s National Sports Day is held on his birthday.
Biography
Soldier and hockey player
Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian Army at sixteen and learnt hockey in regimental matches. He is said to have practised by moonlight after duty, which earned him the name “Chand”, meaning moon. He was selected for India’s tour of New Zealand in 1926.
Olympic gold
At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he was the top scorer as India won hockey gold without conceding a goal. India won again at Los Angeles in 1932, beating the United States 24–1, and at Berlin in 1936, when Dhyan Chand captained the side and India beat Germany 8–1 in the final.
The Wizard
His ability to keep the ball close to his stick led to stories that his stick was examined for magnets or glue. A famous, though unverified, story says Adolf Hitler offered him a post in the German army after the 1936 final. He played until the late 1940s and later coached at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
Legacy
Dhyan Chand rose to the rank of major and received the Padma Bhushan in 1956. He died in Delhi on 3 December 1979. His birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day, the national stadium in Delhi carries his name, and in 2021 India’s highest sporting honour was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna.
Why they matter
Dhyan Chand is the reason hockey was long regarded as India’s national game. At a time when India was a colony with little global presence, his teams won three consecutive Olympic golds and beat the hosts Germany 8–1 in Berlin in 1936, giving Indians a rare source of international pride. The renaming of the country’s highest sporting honour after him in 2021, and National Sports Day on his birthday, reflect how his name has become shorthand for Indian sporting excellence across all disciplines.
