Andrej Karpathy is a Slovak-Canadian AI researcher who was a founding member of OpenAI, led computer vision for Tesla’s Autopilot as director of AI, and created popular deep-learning courses. He founded the AI education company Eureka Labs in 2024 and joined Anthropic in 2026.
Biography
Background
Karpathy was born in Bratislava and moved to Toronto at 15. He studied at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia and earned his PhD at Stanford under Fei-Fei Li, working on image captioning.
Teaching
At Stanford he created CS231n, a course on convolutional networks whose online lectures reached a huge audience.
OpenAI and Tesla
He was a founding research scientist at OpenAI in 2015. From 2017 to 2022 he was Tesla’s director of AI, leading the camera-based neural networks for Autopilot. He briefly returned to OpenAI in 2023.
Eureka Labs and Anthropic
His YouTube series such as “Neural Networks: Zero to Hero” teach how to build language models from scratch. He founded Eureka Labs in 2024, popularised the phrase “vibe coding” in 2025 and joined Anthropic’s pretraining team in 2026.
