Uddhav Thackeray leads the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2022. The son of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, he is also an accomplished photographer.

Biography

Early life

The youngest son of Bal Thackeray, Uddhav studied applied art at the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai and worked as a professional photographer, publishing books of aerial photographs of Maharashtra’s forts and landscapes.

Shiv Sena leader

He became the Shiv Sena’s working president in 2003 and took over as party chief after his father’s death in 2012. He was editor of the party newspaper Saamana from 2006 to 2019.

Chief Minister and the split

After the 2019 Maharashtra election the Shiv Sena broke its long alliance with the BJP over power-sharing, and Thackeray formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government with the NCP and the Congress, becoming Chief Minister on 28 November 2019. He steered the state through the Covid-19 pandemic.

In June 2022 a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde split the party and he resigned. The Election Commission later awarded the Shiv Sena name and symbol to the Shinde faction, and Thackeray’s group became the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). His son Aaditya Thackeray is a member of the state assembly.

Photographer

Before politics Uddhav Thackeray was a professional wildlife and aerial photographer. His books of aerial photographs of Maharashtra’s forts and landscapes, including Maharashtra Desh and Pahava Vitthal, were exhibited and published to acclaim.

Covid-19 and the split

His government steered Maharashtra — then one of the worst-hit states — through the Covid-19 pandemic, and opinion polls at the time rated him among India’s most popular chief ministers. In June 2022 Eknath Shinde led a rebellion of most Shiv Sena MLAs, who allied with the BJP; Thackeray resigned before a floor test. The Election Commission later recognised the Shinde faction as the official Shiv Sena, and the Supreme Court criticised the Governor’s role but did not restore his government.
