Travis Kalanick is an American businessman who co-founded Uber with Garrett Camp and, as CEO from 2010 to 2017, expanded it aggressively into hundreds of cities worldwide. He resigned in 2017 amid scandals over company culture and now runs the ghost-kitchen company CloudKitchens.
Biography
Early ventures
Kalanick studied computer engineering at UCLA and left to work on Scour, a file-sharing search engine that was sued by entertainment companies. He then co-founded Red Swoosh, sold to Akamai in 2007.
Uber
In 2009 he and Garrett Camp started UberCab, a black-car service ordered by smartphone. As CEO from 2010, Kalanick expanded it into ride-sharing and food delivery, often clashing with taxi regulators.
Resignation
In 2017 accusations of sexual harassment and a toxic culture, a lawsuit over self-driving secrets and a video of him arguing with a driver led investors to push him out as CEO in June 2017.
CloudKitchens
He left Uber’s board in 2019 and runs City Storage Systems, which owns CloudKitchens, renting kitchens to delivery-only restaurants.
