Tim Sweeney is an American game developer who founded Epic Games in 1991 and created the Unreal Engine, used for games, films and simulations. Epic’s Fortnite became a global phenomenon, and Sweeney has led legal challenges to Apple’s and Google’s app-store rules.

Biography

Epic MegaGames

While studying mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland, Sweeney released ZZT (1991), a game with an editor, from his parents’ home under the name Potomac Computer Systems, which became Epic MegaGames.

Unreal

He wrote much of the engine for Unreal (1998). Licensed to other studios, the Unreal Engine became one of the industry’s main engines and is now used in films and TV, including virtual sets for The Mandalorian.

Fortnite

Fortnite Battle Royale (2017) made Epic hugely profitable, with hundreds of millions of players. In 2018 Epic launched its own store with a lower revenue share for developers.

App store battles

In 2020 Epic sued Apple and Google over in-app payment rules. Epic won its case against Google in 2023, and a 2025 ruling forced Apple to allow links to outside payments in the US.
