Steve Huffman, known as “spez”, is an American web developer who co-founded Reddit with Alexis Ohanian in 2005 in Y Combinator’s first batch. After leaving and co-founding Hipmunk, he returned as Reddit’s CEO in 2015 and led it to a stock-market listing in 2024.
Biography
Background
Huffman grew up in Virginia and studied computer science at the University of Virginia, where he met Alexis Ohanian.
Their original idea, a food-ordering app, was rejected by Paul Graham, who suggested they build “the front page of the web”. Reddit launched in June 2005; Huffman wrote the code. Condé Nast bought it in 2006.
Hipmunk
Huffman left in 2009 and co-founded the travel search site Hipmunk.
Return
He returned as CEO in 2015. Reddit faced controversies over moderation and a 2023 protest by moderators over API pricing. Reddit listed on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2024 and signed AI data-licensing deals.
