Sid Meier is a Canadian-American game designer who co-founded MicroProse and created the Civilization series, in which players build an empire from the Stone Age to the space age. His name appears on the box of his games, and Civilization has sold tens of millions of copies.
Biography
Background
Meier was born in Ontario to Swiss and Dutch parents and grew up in Michigan, studying computer science and history at the University of Michigan.
MicroProse
In 1982 he and Bill Stealey founded MicroProse after Meier beat Stealey at an arcade flight game. They made flight simulators such as F-15 Strike Eagle.
Civilization
Sid Meier’s Pirates! (1987) and Railroad Tycoon (1990) led to Civilization (1991), a turn-based strategy game. Its “one more turn” appeal became legendary.
Firaxis
In 1996 he co-founded Firaxis Games, which has made later Civilization games. His memoir appeared in 2020.
