Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) is a yoga teacher and spiritual speaker who founded the Isha Foundation near Coimbatore. Known for his talks and social-media following, he has led environmental campaigns such as Rally for Rivers and Save Soil, though some of his projects have drawn criticism.
Biography
Early life
Jaggi Vasudev grew up in Mysore, the son of a doctor, and studied English literature at the University of Mysore. He ran a poultry farm and construction businesses before, he says, a profound spiritual experience on Chamundi Hill in 1982 changed his life.
Isha Foundation
He began teaching yoga classes in 1983 and in 1992 founded the Isha Foundation, with its Isha Yoga Center at the foot of the Velliangiri Mountains near Coimbatore. In 2017 the foundation unveiled a 34-metre bust of Adiyogi, the first yogi, recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest bust sculpture.
Campaigns
Sadhguru led Rally for Rivers in 2017 to raise awareness about India’s rivers and the 2022 Save Soil campaign, riding a motorcycle through Europe, the Middle East and India. His talks and short videos have a huge online audience.
Criticism and honours
His foundation has faced questions about environmental approvals for its buildings, and scientists have criticised some of his health and science claims. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2017 and underwent emergency brain surgery in 2024, after which he recovered.
