Biography
Background
Dahl studied mathematics at UC San Diego and began a PhD at the University of Rochester before leaving to work as a web developer.
Node.js
In 2009 he combined Google’s fast V8 JavaScript engine with a non-blocking input/output library to create Node.js. Presented at JSConf EU, it let developers use one language for browser and server and handle many connections efficiently. Its npm package registry became the largest in the world.
Stepping back
Dahl handed leadership of Node to Joyent in 2012 and later worked on machine learning.
Deno
In a 2018 talk, “10 Things I Regret About Node.js”, he introduced Deno, a runtime built in Rust with TypeScript support and secure defaults. He co-founded the Deno company.
