Background
Ren grew up in a poor family of teachers in Guizhou and studied at the Chongqing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture. He served as an engineer in the People’s Liberation Army.
Huawei
In 1987 he founded Huawei to resell phone switches, then built its own. It expanded from rural China to the world, competing with Ericsson and Nokia.
Global giant
Huawei led in 4G and 5G network equipment and smartphones. It is owned by its employees through a union structure.
Sanctions
The US placed Huawei on a trade blacklist in 2019 over security concerns, cutting it off from Google services and advanced chips. Huawei developed its own HarmonyOS and chips. His daughter Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s CFO, was detained in Canada from 2018 to 2021.
