Damani grew up in a Marwari family in Mumbai and left a commerce degree course to join the family’s ball-bearing business. After his father’s death he moved into stock broking and investing, building a fortune as a patient value investor.
DMart
In 2002 he opened the first DMart store in Powai, Mumbai. He kept costs low by owning store properties, buying in bulk and offering everyday low prices, and the chain grew steadily across western and southern India.
A record listing
When Avenue Supermarts, the company behind DMart, listed in 2017, its shares more than doubled on the first day, making him one of the country’s wealthiest people.
Low profile
