Pandit Jasraj was a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Mewati gharana whose career spanned eight decades. Known for his devotional fervour and expressive voice, he performed across the world, received the Padma Vibhushan and had a minor planet named after him. He died in 2020.
Biography
From tabla to voice
Jasraj was born into a family of musicians in Haryana and grew up in Hyderabad. He first trained as a tabla accompanist under his elder brother, Pandit Maniram, but is said to have decided as a teenager to become a vocalist after feeling that accompanists were not given due respect.
The Mewati style
He became the best-known exponent of the Mewati gharana, known for its emphasis on emotion and clear enunciation of the words. His singing often had a devotional quality, and he popularised Haveli Sangeet, the temple music of the Vaishnava tradition, in concerts.
Innovation and teaching
He devised jasrangi, a form of duet in which a male and female singer sing different ragas simultaneously. He taught many students in India and abroad and founded music schools in several countries.
Honours
Jasraj received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and, in 2000, the Padma Vibhushan. In 2019 the International Astronomical Union named a minor planet 300128 Panditjasraj after him. He died in New Jersey on 17 August 2020, aged 90.
