Bismillah Khan was the master of the shehnai, a reed instrument once played mainly at weddings and temples, whom he made a classical concert instrument. He played at the Red Fort on 15 August 1947 and received the Bharat Ratna in 2001. He died in Varanasi in 2006.
Biography
From ceremonies to concerts
The shehnai was traditionally played at weddings and religious ceremonies. Bismillah Khan developed its range and expressiveness so that it could carry the ragas of Hindustani classical music, and his performances at the All India Music Conference in Calcutta in 1937 brought him wide recognition.
Banaras
Bismillah Khan was born into a family of court musicians in Dumraon, Bihar, and moved as a child to Varanasi to train with his uncle, Ali Bux, who played the shehnai at the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Varanasi, the Ganga and its temples remained at the centre of his life and music.
A national voice
On the night of 15 August 1947 he played at the Red Fort in Delhi as India became independent, and he played again on the first Republic Day in 1950. For decades his shehnai was broadcast on Doordarshan after the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech. He performed around the world and recorded the music for the film Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959).
Simplicity and honours
Despite his fame he lived simply in Varanasi, a devout Shia Muslim who also played at Hindu temples and saw music as a bridge between faiths. He received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, and in 2001 became the third classical musician to receive the Bharat Ratna. He died on 21 August 2006 and was buried with a state funeral, with his shehnai beside him.
