P. V. Sindhu is a badminton player and the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals, with silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020. In 2019 she became India’s first badminton world champion.
Biography
Rio silver
Tall and powerful, she won bronze medals at the World Championships in 2013 and 2014. At the 2016 Rio Olympics she reached the final, beating world-class opponents before losing to Carolina Marín of Spain, and became the youngest Indian Olympic medallist at the time.
World champion
After losing two world finals, she won the 2019 World Championships in Basel, becoming the first Indian badminton world champion. At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, she won bronze, becoming the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. She also won Commonwealth Games gold in 2022.
A sporting family
Sindhu’s parents, P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya, were both national volleyball players; her father won the Arjuna Award. Inspired by Pullela Gopichand’s 2001 All England title, she took up badminton and trained at his academy in Hyderabad, travelling long distances every day.
Honours
Sindhu received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2016 and the Padma Bhushan in 2020. She married Venkata Datta Sai in December 2024.
Why they matter
Sindhu’s two individual Olympic medals put her in an exclusive group of Indian athletes, but her deeper importance is as proof of a system. She came out of Pullela Gopichand’s academy in Hyderabad, which also produced Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth and others, and her success made badminton one of India’s most popular participation sports. Compared with Saina, who broke the barriers first, Sindhu brought a more aggressive, attacking style suited to the modern game, and became the first Indian to win the world championship.
