N. Chandrababu Naidu is the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, serving his fourth term, and national president of the Telugu Desam Party. Known for his focus on technology and investment, he is credited with turning Hyderabad into a major IT hub in the late 1990s.
Biography
Early career
Naidu was born into a farming family in Chittoor district and took a master’s degree in economics at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. Elected to the assembly as a Congress member in 1978, he became a state minister at 30. In 1981 he married Bhuvaneswari, daughter of the actor-politician N. T. Rama Rao, and later joined NTR’s Telugu Desam Party.
CEO Chief Minister
In September 1995 Naidu led a revolt within the TDP and replaced NTR as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, serving until 2004. He promoted e-governance, courted global technology companies and built HITEC City, helping make Hyderabad one of India’s leading IT centres. In 2003 he survived a landmine attack by Maoists near Tirupati. Nationally he was convenor of the United Front in 1996 and a key NDA ally.
Technocrat image
Naidu cultivated an image as a tech-savvy “CEO Chief Minister”, using laptops and video conferencing in governance in the 1990s, courting Bill Gates and Microsoft to open a development centre in Hyderabad, and setting out a “Vision 2020” for the state. Critics argued that his focus on Hyderabad’s IT economy neglected rural Andhra Pradesh, contributing to his 2004 defeat.
Amaravati and the 2024 return
After bifurcation he planned Amaravati as a new capital for Andhra Pradesh; the project stalled under his successor Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and was revived when Naidu returned in 2024. His son Nara Lokesh is a minister in his government.
Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation
After the state was divided in 2014 he became the first Chief Minister of the new Andhra Pradesh and began planning a greenfield capital at Amaravati. He lost power in 2019, and in 2023 was arrested in a corruption case relating to a skill-development scheme, which he called politically motivated; he was later granted bail.
In 2024 the TDP-led alliance with the Jana Sena and the BJP won 164 of 175 assembly seats, and Naidu returned as Chief Minister. With 16 Lok Sabha MPs, the TDP became a crucial partner in the third Modi government.
