Mira Murati is an Albanian-American engineer who, as chief technology officer of OpenAI from 2022 to 2024, oversaw the launch of ChatGPT and DALL·E. She was briefly OpenAI’s interim CEO in November 2023. In February 2025 she launched Thinking Machines Lab.

Background
Murati was born in Vlorë and won a scholarship at 16 to an international school in Canada. She studied at Colby College and earned an engineering degree at Dartmouth.
Tesla and Leap
She worked at Goldman Sachs and Zodiac Aerospace, then as a senior product manager on the Model X at Tesla and at the augmented-reality firm Leap Motion.
OpenAI
Joining OpenAI in 2018, she became CTO in 2022, leading teams behind ChatGPT, DALL·E and GPT-4. When the board removed Sam Altman in November 2023 she served as interim CEO for three days. She left in September 2024.
Thinking Machines Lab
In 2025 she founded Thinking Machines Lab, recruiting many former OpenAI researchers, and raised one of the largest seed rounds in history.
