Mike Lynch was a British technology entrepreneur who founded the software company Autonomy and backed the cybersecurity firm Darktrace. After HP bought Autonomy in 2011 and alleged fraud, he fought long legal battles and was acquitted by a US jury in June 2024. He died weeks later when his yacht sank off Sicily.
Biography
Cambridge
Lynch, whose parents were Irish, studied natural sciences at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and earned a PhD in signal processing.
Autonomy
He founded Autonomy in 1996 to make software that searched and understood unstructured information. It became one of Britain’s largest software companies.
HP and court cases
HP bought Autonomy for $11.1 billion in 2011, then wrote off $8.8 billion and accused Lynch of fraud. A London civil court found largely against him in 2022, but in June 2024 a US jury acquitted him of all criminal charges.
Death
In August 2024 his superyacht Bayesian sank in a storm off Sicily; Lynch, his daughter and five others died. He had also co-founded Invoke Capital and backed Darktrace.
