Biography

Early life

Both of Page’s parents taught computer science at Michigan State University. He studied computer engineering at the University of Michigan and began a PhD at Stanford in 1995.

BackRub and PageRank

At Stanford he studied the link structure of the web, treating links as votes. With Sergey Brin he built a search engine called BackRub using the PageRank algorithm, which produced much better results than rivals.

Google

They founded Google in September 1998 in a Menlo Park garage. Page was CEO until 2001, when Eric Schmidt took over, and again from 2011, leading the acquisition of Android and the push into mobile.

Alphabet

In 2015 Page created Alphabet as Google’s parent and became its CEO, with Sundar Pichai running Google. He stepped down in 2019 but remains a board member and controlling shareholder with Brin.
