Karlheinz Brandenburg is a German electrical engineer and mathematician who led much of the work on MP3, the audio compression format that made digital music downloads and portable players possible. He was a key member of the Fraunhofer team that developed it.

Biography

Education

Brandenburg studied electrical engineering and mathematics at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, where his PhD research focused on compressing music using models of human hearing.

MP3

At Fraunhofer’s institute in Erlangen, he and colleagues developed methods that remove sounds people cannot hear, shrinking audio files to about a tenth of their size. Standardised as MPEG-1 Audio Layer III in 1993 and named “.mp3” in 1995, it became the format of the digital music revolution.

Suzanne Vega

Brandenburg tested the algorithm repeatedly on Suzanne Vega’s a cappella song “Tom’s Diner”, which was hard to compress well.

Later work

He founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau and became a professor there, later working on spatial audio and founding the company Brandenburg Labs.
