Jeff Bezos is an American businessman who founded Amazon in his garage in 1994 as an online bookshop and built it into the world’s largest online retailer and cloud-computing company. He stepped down as CEO in 2021 and is Amazon’s executive chairman. He also founded Blue Origin and owns The Washington Post.
Biography
Early life
Bezos was born in Albuquerque and grew up in Texas and Florida; his adoptive father, Miguel Bezos, was a Cuban immigrant. He graduated from Princeton in electrical engineering and computer science in 1986 and worked on Wall Street, becoming a vice-president at D. E. Shaw.
Amazon
In 1994 he quit his job, drove to Seattle and founded Amazon, starting with books. It went public in 1997, survived the dot-com crash and expanded into almost every product category, with Prime membership from 2005.
AWS and devices
Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006, pioneered cloud computing and became Amazon’s most profitable unit. The Kindle e-reader (2007) and the Alexa voice assistant (2014) followed.
Space and media
Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000 and flew to space on its New Shepard rocket in July 2021. He bought The Washington Post in 2013. He handed the CEO role to Andy Jassy in July 2021.
