James Gosling is a Canadian computer scientist who created the Java programming language at Sun Microsystems, released in 1995. Java’s “write once, run anywhere” design made it one of the most widely used languages, powering enterprise systems and Android apps.

Biography

Education

Gosling studied computer science at the University of Calgary and earned his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in 1983. He wrote an early Unix version of the Emacs editor, known as Gosling Emacs.

Java

At Sun in 1991 he led the “Green Project” to build software for consumer devices. He designed a language first called Oak, renamed Java, which compiled to bytecode running on a virtual machine. Released in 1995 with web applets, it spread quickly to servers and enterprise software.

Influence

Java became the main language for Android apps and big business systems, and its virtual machine hosts other languages such as Kotlin and Scala.

After Sun

Gosling left after Oracle bought Sun in 2010. He worked at Google, Liquid Robotics on ocean robots, and Amazon Web Services until 2024. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007.
