Hock Tan is a Malaysian-born American business executive who has led Avago Technologies, now Broadcom Inc., since 2006. Through a series of large acquisitions, including Broadcom, CA Technologies and VMware, he turned it into one of the world’s most valuable semiconductor and software companies, and a key supplier of custom AI chips.
Biography
Early career
He worked in finance roles at General Motors and PepsiCo, ran companies in Malaysia and Singapore, and became CEO of Integrated Circuit Systems.
Background
Tan grew up in Penang and won a scholarship to MIT, where he studied mechanical engineering, and earned an MBA at Harvard.
Avago to Broadcom
Tan became CEO of Avago, a spin-off of Hewlett-Packard’s chip business, in 2006. In 2016 Avago bought Broadcom for about $37 billion and took its name.
Software and AI
Broadcom bought CA Technologies (2018), Symantec’s enterprise business (2019) and VMware (2023) for about $69 billion. Its custom AI chips for large cloud companies made it one of the biggest winners of the AI boom.
