Biography
Cambridge
Upton studied physics and engineering and computer science at St John’s College, Cambridge, and earned a PhD and an MBA. As director of studies in computer science he noticed fewer applicants had programming experience.
The idea
In 2006 he began prototyping a cheap computer for young people. In 2009 he co-founded the Raspberry Pi Foundation with Cambridge colleagues while working as a chip architect at Broadcom.
Raspberry Pi
The first Raspberry Pi went on sale in February 2012 and sold out instantly. More than 60 million have been sold, used in schools, hobby projects and industry.
Business
Raspberry Pi Holdings listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2024, with Upton as CEO. He was appointed CBE in 2016.
